Grieg & Chopin (A Music Bridge Between Norway And Poland, 2011)

Spurred by the meeting of Polish saxophonist Grzech Piotrowski and Norwegian guitarist Frode Barth these project features three super-star players from both countries: Arild Andersen on bass, Jon Christensen on drums and Marcin Wasilewski on piano. With such a stellar cast it is no surprise that music is enjoyable and one can only wish it is available to public. But it isn't! Why? It was financed by Norwegian state fund for cultural projects in Poland (great accolade please!!!) but simultaneously because such a scheme was utilized to make it happen, music is forbidden to be commercially used. In the effect a very interesting album  remains locked in vaults by some bureaucratic lack of vision. Up to this moment I thought that system stupidity was inherent in  communist regime in Poland before 1989 but this situation persuades me that it can also exist in capitalism and fully depends on people intelligence...

Going back to music it is (somewhat remotely) inspired by two giants of national classical music, respectively for Poland and Norway, Chopin and Grieg. But its main focus is beautiful sound that these artists produce which resembles closely what Christensen, Andersen and Wasilewski record for legendary ECM label. Thoughtful, refined, deep this music displays what is the best in (Northern) European attitude toward jazz.

GP
